Sample approval is very important for paper box production
Material Selection for Sampling
When making a box sample, use the same materials as the bulk order.
This way, the sample will look almost identical to the final product.
However, we usually don’t apply special effects like embossing or spot UV coating to samples. Instead, we use color to show it.
A sample is the best way to show what the box is like
After making samples, we can see what needs improvement. For example, the design, paper, or colors. We also learn the production steps. This helps ensure the box is exactly what the client wants.
So, what do we need to prepare for a packaging box sample, and what does it cost?
Design
The client needs to provide the design drawings in vector format. Vector graphics do not lose quality when enlarged, as they are resolution-independent; the graphics can be scaled without affecting clarity. Please provide the design in vector format. Vector files stay sharp when enlarged, so they can be scaled to any size.
Box Size and Box Style
The box size and structural design determine sample cost and influence the product's market competitiveness.
Sample Box Cost
Sample cost depends on box style and materials used, including sourcing, printing, lamination, cutting, and production time.
Differences between the sample and mass production
CBMPrint often use a cutting machine to produce box samples, the dimensions of samples may not be as precise as those in mass production. If a client requests a sample made on an actual printing press, the process takes longer and costs more. It includes press setup fees, PS plate costs, paper and ink waste, among other items.
For colors, the images from a digital printer and actual printing may look different because the machines, ink, and production details are not the same. This is normal. The sample box is for checking the box size and content, and colors are for reference only.
Sample Processes
Check if the file is ready to print, for example, for the bleeding, missing fonts, and correct size.
Artwork
We stock some papers for proofs. Special papers (e.g., food-grade cardstock) need to be purchased as needed
Materials
We can print directly from the file, or using spot colors for proofing (to closely match production colors) is not recommended due to the higher cost.
Printing
For most paper boxes, we only laminated with glossy or matte film. Samples receive aqueous coating only when it is used in bulk production.
Lamination
When the paper weight exceeds 450 gsm or we use corrugated board, we need to mount two sheets together.
Mounting
Using the die lines from the design file, we cut the flat sheet material into the specified shape of the box.
Cutting
We need to assemble the box/paper strap and check the content, dimensions, and structure before shipping.
